Nikifor Parfomuk (probably c. 1940) Stratonik Parfomuk Emigration 1910
March 15, 1894 — On this date, Walter Parfomak’s father, Nikifor Parfomuk, was born. He was the son of Aleksander and Eudokja (née Wojtowicz). Why “Parchomuk” became “Parfomuk” is not known. Nikifor (Nicefor) was born in Berezna, which, by this time, had been under Russian administration for nearly a century. Under Russian rule, nearly all peasants had been forced to convert to the Russian Orthodox religion. Czar Alexander III still ruled the empire, but his son, the future Czar Nicholas II — the last czar — would come to power later that year. The photo above is Nikifor, probably around 1940.
Nikifor had at least two brothers. One brother emigrated to Chicago in the early 1900’s. The record above lists the immigration of one Stratonik Parfomuk in March of 1910 at age 27 (b. 1883). Stratonik is listed as being related to “Alexander Parfomuk” from “Berezny” in Grodno, so he was almost certainly Nikifor’s older brother. Walter tried to find him in Chicago in the 1950’s or early 1960’s but, according to Stratonik’s neighbor, he had passed away years before, leaving no wife or children. Nikifor’s other brother served in the czar’s navy, but his name, age, and fate are unknown.
